Ammo Cans are Our Favorite - Geocaching Stories
Hobby Cache Hall of Fame
Ammo Cans are Our Favorite
It's just after dinner and we're flipping the channels to find something on TV. Nothing. So we decide to go out geocaching. Our family goes all the time. We know the drill. Dad prints out a couple of good caches from the web. Mom gets some water and the toys to trade. The kids get on good shoes. ...and we're off. We've already found all the caches close to home so we travel to a nearby town to find one. It's out in what looks like a farmer's field. Walking around searching the trees while dad gets a reading on the GPS, I watch a couple of cars go by and wonder what they must be thinking about our family wandering out here. My thoughts are interrupted as I hear dad shout, "Here it is." All the kids come running and circle around the can. They can barely contain their excitement as we open it. One of the kids, my 9 year old, exclaims, "Ammo cans are my favorite!" We all laugh and agree. There's nothing valuable ever in there, some Happy Meal toys, a memo pad of paper, plastic ruler, kid binoculars, etc. ... The treasure we find geocaching never has been in the ammo box - but in the memories we make. "Good thing," I say to myself, "that we didn't just decide to sit around and watch the TV."
